Stand-Alone Journalism?

What are web logs? Chris Nolan suggests they are morphing into "stand-alone journalism." I've called it "reader-supported journalist". And there's discussion on the web (Instapundit is one place I've seen it) of whether weblogs are mitigating or increasing the tendency of many folks to get their news and opinions only from sources that match their viewpoints and biases.
