I don't think that picking a major based on how much money you can make is an irrational or bad decision. Does our society not need lawyers? Doctors? Computer programmers? I've known a lot of bright students who don't know what to major in, in part because they're not really interested in very much. I can understand that--not everyone is very intellectually curious. For such people a high-paying job requiring mainly technical skill seems like a reasonable goal.
